Depressive Illness - Curse of the Strong!
« on: November 29, 2010, 08:36:26 PM »
Hi, heard about this progtramme today, which I'd missed (three cheers for iplayer!), listened to it and it's like a warm acceptance hug (accepting, validating and positive). I would say definitely worth a listen, even if you don't like the dodgy music choices during  ;D

I'm listening to this for the second time now. It's so nice to hear an expert say that it is not a weakness to become depressed and to explain it as a physical disorder; worse than double pneumonia! Ever since I was struck down with depression, some years ago, I have had to justify the way I felt and try to convince people of how awful it really was. I have always felt embarrassed of it and no one has ever really understood (certainly within my family anyway), so it is very nice to get a validation like this.
Thanks for posting Stresspuppy! :-)

A friend of mine who also suffered with their first depressive episode was really struggling with understanding the mechanisms of depression - the chemical imbalance and how they were so 'not themselves' and how it could happen to them found the book really clear, accessible and informative. I've not read it myself yet but it's likely to be in my next Amazon order. Glad you found it useful.  ;)
