I love seagulls
« on: August 15, 2010, 08:32:38 PM »
..I really do! They're a bit nuts...saw a flurry of them outside my kitchen window, no idea where they came from..but there they were swopping and swirling. So strong and a little frightening but very cool...and they make me smile (well, when not defending my chips - cos whose not had a fight with a seagull on the rights of who has chip ownership? )

They get a bad press but I'm all for scooping up the seagull seaside complainers and putting them on a train to London.. Soz to anyone who hates them but I shall defend the seagull with all my might (and er, some choice words).

Anyway, sunday inane ramble over. Back to work tomorrow and must remember to put on serious grown up head instead (dull dull dull)

Night all and a merry week to you :)

Reminds me of that Hitchcock classic 'The Birds' - one of my favourites, something very captivating about these creatures - ancestors from from a prehistoric age - primal,  scary, strong and due respect  ;D musing over enjoy your week too cyclegirl and look forward to perhaps meeting you on Wednesday and just remember to check the meet ups and events section regarding the venue. I know a bit broken record  ;)

If we leave the window open at night, they wake us up squawking in the early hours of the morning. They are SO loud!!

Yay for seagulls! Their call was the first thing that reminded me I was in Brighton and that the sea wasn't far away, when I woke up for the first time in my new flat back in January. They're feisty little things too!

Another pro-seagull here.. they make me laugh, especially when they're stomping around for worms.

ahhh so pleased we've got some seagull fans on here *cycle girl sends big out big cheesy smile*

I've never been phased by seagull noises - I seem to have an innate ability to shut off (and I guess growing up on a council estate in London, I may have quite high tolerance - it was all those drum and bass parties eek), whereas my ex was rubbish and always had the ear plugs...even if the upstairs neighbour walked around their flat, poor neighbour

I have mixed feelings about seagulls as some of you will know. Like some others, to me their sounds are evocative of the seaside and childhood holidays. I love to watch the young seagulls gaining their whiter feathers and the confidence to move away from their watchful parents.

Now, on the other hand, and it's probably very particular to me, I get attacked by them when I go running in the Summer. As soon as the eggs are out, I become a threat to them; not so much if I'm walking but as soon as I run I get the G,g,g,g,g,g,g, aggressive calls and the pooping on me and the dropping moss and small stones on me and eventually the swooping at the back of my head.

I guess it's because of my unusual plumage but they have a good memory and whenever I wear a hat they still seem to know it's me! I've recently moved to another part of Brighton and the problem persists. I know have to choose my route to avoid inhabited rooftops and chimneys.

I could go on with the stories..... but I don't want anyone to become unduly scared..... I'm sure it's just because of my hair.  ;D

Yes I expect the seagulls are attacking you because of your hair Martin.  :)

It probably goes back to the infamous running street battles between Seagulls and Parrots on the Brighton seafront in the early 1960s. The parrots would turn up in large numbers from London on their tricycles and smart plumage, mimicking the gulls and the seagulls would retaliate by swooping and dropping stones, knocking the parrots off their tricycles. It all got out of control when Reggie the Parrot caught and plucked Fats Laridae, for which the seagulls will never forgive!

Its folklore!

Thanks Mr Bob,
It can be traumatic for me and just to have a credible explanation makes it so much easier to cope with.  ;D

I love em too. I really worry for the babies when I seem the walking on the road learning to fly.
Once a year I paint the Victorian fountain on the Old Stiene. I paint it in the Spring after it has been off in the winter. There's always a seagulls nest at the top where the water come out. I always feel bad when I have to tern the water on but then feel better when I see them playing in the water.

me too, seagulls, all seabirds really.  i like how they go beyond the limits of land, out into that, to me, sometimes scary expanse where there's no terra firma to touch down on.  i love that some of them just live out there way beyond what I can see, like guillemots that huddle in their little rafts on the waves, and i love that seagulls can go there but they come back and mingle amongst us too.

seagulls - cool little white birds, sometimes elegantly dancing in the sky, other times strutting with attitude, ever observant - love em!
